Environmental inspectors required $ 1,000 for not noticing air pollution

While Carpathian village resident’s try to defend their forests from total deforestation on their own, often at the cost of their own health, officials who have to do so continue to take bribes. The website of the State Bureau of Investigation (DBR) published information about the two heads departments detained of the State Environmental Inspectorate in Volyn region. They were detained while receiving a bribe. 

According to the DBR website, investigators of the DBR TU (Specifications) in Lviv detained two heads of departments of the State Ecological Inspectorate in Volyn Oblast after receiving illegal benefits (Part 3 of Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

“According to preliminary information, the State Coinspection employees demanded $ 1,000 from a citizen for the reduction of fines imposed on the company due to excessive emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere from stationary emission sources”, the statement said.

On January 12, 2021, both officials were detained under Art. 208 of the Ukraine Criminal Procedure Code. The sanction of the article provides for imprisonment for a term from 5 to 10 years with deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for up to 3 years with confiscation of property.
